Between longing and farewell, memory and transformation, Viktor Ullmann’s songs unfold as a universe of remarkable poetic intensity. Hard It Is to Leave Beauty Behind… offers a richly faceted portrait of a composer whose voice resonates with particular urgency today: rooted in late Romanticism, sharpened by modernism, and indelibly marked by the upheavals of the twentieth century.
As a Jewish composer, Ullmann was persecuted by the Nazi regime, deported to Theresienstadt in 1942, and murdered in Auschwitz in 1944. Yet it was precisely under these conditions of deprivation and existential threat that his artistic language attained a striking clarity and force. Ullmann conceived of art as an act of resistance—a space of inner freedom capable of enduring even in the face of catastrophe.
